North Sonar HM Carbon Mast

The North Sonar HM Carbon Mast is North's High Modulus pre-preg carbon mast, built to be impossibly thin and impressively fast, cutting drag further than North's standard Carbon mast while adding stiffness.

  • High Modulus pre-preg carbon construction
  • For wing foiling, prone surf, pump, downwind and racing
  • Submerged section over 15% thinner than North's standard Carbon mast
  • Increased bending and torsional stiffness
  • Reduced ventilation at the trailing edge in any sea state
  • Sportier, crisper feel with tighter, higher-riding turns
  • Intermediate+ to advanced riders

Performance & Feel

The key thing about the HM Mast is its thickness. The submerged section is over 15% thinner than North's standard Carbon mast and that reduction is paired with an increase in both bending and torsional stiffness rather than a trade-off against it. Less material moving through the water means less drag and quicker turns. For anyone riding well and looking to sharpen their connection to the foil, it's a genuine step up.

Each length is tuned to a specific job rather than sharing one profile across the range. The HM80 is built for disciplines without wind power: prone surf, pump and downwind, where a shorter chord length throughout cuts drag and sharpens manoeuvrability for more efficient pumping and quicker turns. The HM85 is the all-rounder, with a focus on wing foiling. Its submerged chord length runs fractionally longer than the HM80's to provide the upwind drive that wind-powered disciplines need, then increases again near the top of the mast, clear of the water once you're on foil, to maximise stiffness without a drag penalty. The HM105 is built for racing: its submerged section is a further 1mm thinner than the HM80 and HM85 for maximum top-end speed, at the cost of jumping performance, with the same tailored chord length logic as the HM85.

Trailing-edge ventilation gets specific attention across the whole range, staying under control regardless of sea state, so the thinness doesn't come at the cost of predictability when things get choppy.

Our Test Team Thoughts

"Riding this mast took some dialling into. It is super thin but also super stiff. You tend to ride higher off the water and with less mast in the water turns become tighter and crisper. Things almost felt like dropping a front wing size as the feeling from underfoot felt more direct. Is it worth the price tag? We think so, yes."

Key Features

  • High Modulus pre-preg carbon: submerged section over 15% thinner than North's standard Carbon mast, with increased resistance to bending with torsional stiffness
  • HM80: tuned for prone surf, pump and downwind, with a shorter chord length throughout for less drag and sharper manoeuvrability
  • HM85: the all-rounder with a focus on wing foiling, a fractionally longer submerged chord length for upwind drive, increasing again near the top of the mast for stiffness with no drag penalty once you're up on foil
  • HM80 and HM85 for maximum top-end speed; not built for jumping
  • HM105: optimised for racing, with the submerged section a further 1mm thinner than the HM95
  • Ventilation-resistant trailing edge: stays controlled regardless of sea state
  • Efficient underwater shape: less drag for a higher, easier-to-reach top-end speed
